Bill Maloney is not your typical oil executive.

Local Statoil boss in the news last Saturday in Houston Chronicle, he is not A4 person, driving his Mini Cooper (like my wife and I) and not one of the big SUV. Of course my wife have given me many interesting stories, (sorry not to be shared) however I look forward to listen to him at the Annual Breakfast Seminar in Houston OTC Monday May 2’nd (Plaza Ballroom Westin Galleria).

While on sabbatical recently, he taught in an orphanage in Nepal, trekked the Himalayas with his son, ran the London Marathon and played drums in jazz, blues and rock bands. Now, he's back to work — with a big job. On Jan. 1, Maloney took over as executive vice president in charge of North America for Norwegian oil giant Statoil. The position is new; it was created in a reorganization that underscored the growing importance of Statoil's U.S. and Canadian operations as North Sea fields decline in Norway.
It also highlighted the faith the multinational company has in this geologist from New York with uniquely wide interests. During a conversation with the Chronicle's Brett Clanton at Statoil's office in Houston, Maloney discussed his new role, why Statoil likes North America and how Houston may soon benefit from the company's growth plans.
